If you're using an Apple machine – be it a MacBook or an iMac – you've surely heard the age-old mantra – 'you can't game on Mac' or 'get a PC if you want to play games' and, to be fair, that was true for quite a long time. Too long, even because if you ask many people about gaming on a Mac, you'd get 'really?' look.

To be fair, gaming and Apple never really went along. For years you could only install smaller independent games and hope those big studios would find a reason to port their game over from Windows which, to be fair, almost never happened. And with good reason.

The Issues of Competitive Games on a Mac

The folks who use Mac OS exclusively are rarely power users, they're either creatives who prefer the Mac eco-system and are doing creative work (design, video, audio) or are simply ordinary customers who just want a high-quality polished machine that works well even years after purchasing it.

Even though you're essentially investing more money and getting less value (from a hardware perspective), buying a Mac OS machine is still as valid today as it ever was – given that you have a clear reason why you'd want one. But you could never really have a full-fledged gaming experience on a Mac machine, regardless of how strong it was.

But over the years that changed. It was a slow process, perhaps even unnoticeable for the majority of users, but as time went on Mac was getting represented a lot more with newer releases. Sure, there was always the option of setting up Windows through BootCamp or a virtual machine, but that always required a ton of hassle without satisfying results.

If you run a virtual machine, you wouldn't have to reboot on a Mac to get to Windows, but then again, you'd be splitting your hardware. Let's say two CPU cores on a Mac and two for Windows, the same goes for your RAM memory and GPU. When you go down that road, then you're essentially butchering your own experience.

Don't Expect A Perfect Experience on a Mac

If you're not going to spend money on an alternative solution (I'll go over a couple of them later on in the article), then you should be prepared for some mediocre performance. Macs simply aren't built for gaming – that's just the way things are. Apple simply never prioritized that end of the spectrum.

You're always going to get better performance on almost any game on Windows than on a Mac – and that sucks, but at least gaming on a Mac isn't a fantasy any longer.

Virtual Machines are Still an Option on a Mac

While it's not exactly the best, most user-friendly path you could take, installing Windows through a virtual machine (you can use software like Parallels or VMWare) is perfectly viable, as long as you're prepared for a drop-off in performance.I played League of Legends through a virtual machine for about a year back in 2013.

While it was far from a perfect experience (you can't just jump into a game, you have to boot the virtual machine, wait for things to load and then log in), it was still very playable, with surprising frame rates on fairly weak hardware. But this is a pretty primitive way to solve the problem even though it requires a bit of tech savviness.

Thunderbolt 3 eGPUs

A very specific way to maneuver on a Mac OS with the gaming conundrum is to buy an external GPU, which you could then connect to your iMac or MacBook via the USB-C port that has Thunderbolt 3 support. So you can still use a fairly underpowered (by modern GPU standards) MacBook Pro, and still play all the latest titles maxed out, thanks to an external graphics card.

It's not going to be the most practical or cheapest solution out there, but it's a road that you can take. Depending on the eGPU enclosure you go for, you're going to have to spend up to $300 for the bare metal itself. Then you have to add up the price of a solid graphics card – and they don't go for cheap these days.

That said, if you do go down this route, you're going to have fantastic results when it comes to performance. And if you're really big into having a portable set-up (say a 13' MacBook Pro) then having an eGPU back home when you want to get your game on might not be such a bad solution.

The Time is Changing – Cloud Gaming on a Mac

Playing a video game – or, rather, streaming it to your machine – always sounded like an insanely cool and practical concept. In the age of thin and light laptops, there's less space for strong, dedicated graphics cards. So wouldn't it be fantastic if you could just play any game, regardless of the machine you have and still get solid performance?

That was just a dream only a couple of years ago. Technically, it was possible, and multiple services provided cloud gaming, but there was always a ton of usability issues, and in the end, it just wasn't a satisfying experience. Until now. Nvidia GeForce Now is essentially a small revolution in the world of cloud gaming.

Nvidia's marketing lure is clear – 'Transform a $200 PC into a gaming rig'. It sounds too good to be true, but it's actually honest marketing.

So how does it work in a nutshell? You're basically 'renting' a GTX 1080 that's closest to you (stacked somewhere as a part of Nvidia's servers), and it's doing all the heavy lifting and sending the data to your laptop via your internet connection.

The only thing you have to do is connect your Steam, Batle.Net or uPlay account and start playing. You have access to over 200 pre-installed popular titles, and when they say 'popular,' they really do mean it. Essentially making the whole process plug-and-play.

Can A Macbook Pro Run Overwatch Pro

Since you don't have to download and install your entire game library because every supported game is already pre-installed on their servers.

The Geforce NOW service

Right now, at the time of this writing, the GeForce NOW service is completely free if you have a beta key, and if you don't have one, you can request it at the official Nvidia website. The latency is almost non-existent, so in the end, you're not losing out on anything. Call of duty macbook. The service is still in beta while working out kins, but it works exactly as advertised.

So all of a sudden, it doesn't matter that you're on Mac OS. It doesn't matter if you're using a prehistoric MacBook Pro with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU – the only thing that matters is that you have a fast (and stable) enough internet connection, and you can play any game you want whenever you want – and you even crank up the settings to your heart's content.

Conclusion of Esports on a Mac

Fortunately, even without streaming services like GeForce NOW, many esport game developers ported their games over to Mac, and they're actually running fairly decent – depending on your hardware, of course. It's not exactly as smooth of an experience as the one you would get on a PC, but at least it's playable, and you don't have to be a wizard for it to work.

Is Overwatch Playable On Mac

Right now, you can download the Mac client for almost every popular esport title – League of Legends, DOTA 2, Fortnite, Rocket League, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, etc. The only game that's missing is Overwatch, but Blizzard could end up porting it over to Mac as well. Especially with the success, they've been able to attain with Overwatch League.

So if you're big on playing esport titles, you really don't have to invest anything if you want to start playing on your Mac machine. Developers eventually realized that they're missing out on a lot of potential income and a huge player base by ignoring the Mac ecosystem, so they're working all they can to rectify the problem.

For you as the end Mac OS user, these are some exciting times. It was pretty unthinkable just a couple of years ago that Mac would get such solid support when it comes to esport titles, but against all the odds, it actually happened. It took them a while, but it was worth the wait.
